Background

I had a Mazda 3 which I really liked but, with a new baby boy, I wanted something a bit bigger and safer. As a sales associate for a real estate agency, I’m out on the road a lot. My Mitsubishi Outlander LS Black Edition is a mid-sized SUV with a lot of extras that suited my needs perfectly.

Once I knew what I wanted, I searched for a lender online and found loans.com.au straight away. I wanted to get pre-approved for the loan before I went in to the dealer to buy because I’m on maternity leave. I didn't want to get excited and look at a car and then have to say that I'm wasting everyone's time because I can't get finance! So, I filled out the loans.com.au pre-approval form online a few days before I planned to go in to the dealer, and a loans.com.au loan specialist called me within about 20 minutes. She said: “Yeah, it looks like you're eligible. We can get you pre-approved quite quickly.” I really liked the fast outcome. I didn't realise it would be that quick. Now that I’ve bought the car, I’m still getting used to it but I drive it every day and I love it.

Challenges

  • Getting a loan while I was on maternity leave. When you say you're on maternity leave, dealers basically look at you and think you're not going to get financed. The first dealer didn't even want to talk to me because I'm on maternity leave. But once I could say I've got loan pre-approval, they were happy to talk.
  • Negotiating a better price with a car dealer when the supply of cars is still tight.

Solutions

  • I contacted loans.com.au and got pre-approved almost immediately. Maternity leave wasn’t a problem.
  • Once I had pre-approval from loans.com.au, it put me in a much stronger position to negotiate. The first dealer I went to wouldn’t negotiate so I just went to the next one who would negotiate and bought from them. I wasn’t dependent on the dealer for finance so I knew I could just walk out anytime and go elsewhere.

One the day of settlement, I was updated every minute about the settlement. They were struggling to get a hold of the dealership because it was a public holiday.
